Community Helpers

We have been studying Community Helpers and all the important people that make up our Community -- our culminating project will be our class Important People Book!  Here are some of the important people we have met so far!

The Irving Fire Department came to talk to us about Fire Safety and to show us the tools they use to keep us safe!

The Fire Fighter showing us how much gear he must put on to keep himself safe in a fire ... which helps him save people who may be trapped in a fire.

The kids listening to the firefighters!

Listening to the firefighters talk about the tools on their truck & each child got to go into the truck!

The Hook & Ladder Truck

Extra hoses, axes and tanks on the truck.

A class picture in front of the Hook & Ladder truck.
 Irving POLICE OFFICER!

Below is a fingerprint dusting kit.

Nurse Emma -- who works at Cook's Children's Hospital

She had LOTS of tools, bandaids, cotton, tape, stethoscope, syringe, thermometer, blood pressure cuff & gloves!
Nurse Emma wears gloves to keep her germs off of patients and patients germs off of her.
She showed us an adult blood pressure cuff -- she said that one for kids is a LOT smaller!
When it squeezes our arm, it checks the pressure of our heart.

The children made fire trucks in ART!

Police Car counting puzzle game!

The children had to find all the pieces from numbers 1 - 10 and put the police car back together again!

Impromptu picnic lunch when we were evacuated from the building ...
It was fun to eat outside for a change!

Special Agent Parker -- Homeland Security Agent ... he had LOTS of really cool tools!
flashlight, 2 pairs of handcuffs, 2 badges, guns ... and lots of secret pockets!

He also talked to us about how to stay safe when we are on the internet!

Mr. Dave from Calloways Garden came to us to talk to us about gardening, plants, seeds and making the world a beautiful place!

If you were unable to come to Literacy Night, you missed me dressed as THE STORYTELLER!
I read Giggle, Giggle, Quack and gave the kids a make and take book!

Our HOMES this past week was Collaboration. We discussed and reflected on all the things we have learned since the beginning of school. In CREW on Friday, the children collaborated and drew their favorite things they learned so far this year!

What We've Been Up To

We kicked off the week with coloring boys and girls from ALL different countries!
It was fun to see the kids trying to figure out why each of them had a different picture to work color.
They brought their picture to CREW meeting and we discussed the similarities and differences.

We began reading Children Around the World and will continue to read it and learn about children from all around the world!

I had cut out this blue circle last week and had some leftover pieces of torn up construction paper from last year. I had the kids return their picture back to their seat and I placed this on the floor ... they realized after a short discussion that they would be making the world!

They worked together for about 20 minutes and made something spectacular!!!!
It was wonderful to hear them using words like sharing and you can go next!

We finished our Ten Little Monster books ... they should have brought them home.
We will be singing this song at the September 18 Community Circle -- hope you can join us!
Watch for more details ...

The children did a FANTASTIC job of listening and following directions!
We will be using the computer lab most Thursday afternoons from 1pm - 2pm!

We studied our sense of SIGHT this week and took a Nature Walk to the back of Manara!
The children sat and drew the wonderful things they saw ... grasshoppers, dragonflies, butterflies, bees, grass, flowers, clouds, trees, dirt, airplanes ... and many other things.

We began working in small groups for Center work.
I had the kids working on WORLD puzzles for our Me On the Map exhibition

Hope you enjoyed a glimpse into our classroom!!!!
If you have NOT signed the permission slip for your child to be photographed -- please do so ASAP so that you can see your child on the web-site!
