Newsletter -- February 9, 2015

This week is KINDNESS week at Manara Academy. We will be working on Kindness activities throughout the week.  I will be OUT on Friday and Ms. Ozzie will be with the children that day.
I would like to have our KINDNESS “party” on Thursday afternoon … If the children would like to bring a small treat for the other kids in the class to take home … that would be GREAT!  Since we did not have a 100 day food party …. I would like to bring small cupcakes for the kids for that day …. please let me know if your child cannot have a cupcake. As far as I know -- we have no allergies this year.  There are 18 children in the class.

We will be finishing up many of our Water projects this week -- we are working on Donation posters and those are coming out FABULOUS! We are also finishing our Rain on the … pages for our class book.  We are getting ready for our Water Showcase -- It is tentatively set for Friday, February 27 at 11:45 -- stay tuned -- more information coming.  The children should still be collecting SMALL CHANGE for our donation to Buckner … all money is due to our class by the 20th.  It would be great if our class could be responsible for purchasing 1 or 2 kits!  I think that is really possible!!

We are starting addition this week.  This is always fun for the children!

Please keep having them read at home -- I will be sending home Scholastic Book orders again this week -- it is a great way to pick up a couple books for them to practice reading. This issue of Scholastic Books has a Great Reading Level Guide on it …. Books for A - C are great for most of the class and D, E, F, & G are appropriate for children who are independently reading. It’s a great time to start stocking up on some books to have over the summer. Buy a couple and put some away for Rainy Summer Days!

Once again -- I will be out on Friday, February 13 -- Ms. Ozzie will be here -- remind the children to be on their best behavior

NO SCHOOL -- Monday, February 16 -- President’s Day

Any questions -- email me or check out the web-site!!!!!

Kindergarten -- January
Last week, Mr. Steve from Buckner, Int'l came to our school to talk to the children about Water Filtration Kits that Buckner helps distribute ALL OVER THE WORLD and in PARTS of Texas. We will be continuing to work on our Water Expedition. For the next 5 weeks, we will be collecting SMALL CHANGE (pennies, nickels, & dimes) to make a BIG CHANGE! They will bring home a small water bottle and any change that they can collect would be greatly appreciated! The children took a vote and for the next 3 weeks, we will donate our dress down money to be able to buy a filtration kit!
Reading/Writing -- Please have the children work on RAZ-KIDS ... we will be using the computers in the classroom and in the computer lab.
Please work on rhyming words at home and also the sight words.
Math -- The children are working on Greater Than > ... Less Than < ... and Equal To =
We are also working on decomposing numbers -- (example -- how can you make 5 (1 & 4); (2 & 3); (0 & 5)

If you have any questions or concerns -- please feel free to email me.  THANKS!

Kindergarten -- September 19, 2014

We will be working on Letters Ss and Rr next week. You can help your child at home by having them practice writing and finding words that begin with Aa, Tt, Cc and Mm. A great way to is get a magazine and have them CUT out words or CIRCLE words with a crayon finding those letters. Give them a piece of paper and have them write the letters or copy the words they found.

We are still working on shapes in Math.

We are working on Community Helpers and Citizenship for Social Studies.

We will be working on writing our color words.

I will be traveling to BALTIMORE, MARYLAND on Thursday and Friday of next week, for the Baltimore Book Festival ... I will be reading my latest book in the author's tent. I will try and post pictures from the festival so you can show the children Baltimore and ME! The children will have Mrs. Ozzie for a substitute on those days ... they have met Ms. Ozzie and know that I will be gone -- please remind them those days to be on their best behavior.

If you have any questions or concerns -- please feel free to email me. THANKS!

Kindergarten -- September 5, 2014

We are continuing to work on Name Writing in upper and lower case letters. A great site you can use to work on handwriting at home is HANDWRITING PRACTICE . Click on the link and make pages. You will need to print them out and then have your child trace their name or other words you would like them to practice.
Next week we will focus on letters As and Tt. We will also continue working on numbers 1 - 20.
We will continue talking about our world and our cultures. We will continue working on our senses.

THE PAPER DOLLS ARE DUE!! If you child did not turn in their paper doll on September 5, please turn it in ASAP.

Our Design Principle for September is Responsibility for Learning -- the Habit of a Manara Explorer this week is also Responsibility. The children are learning to take responsibility for their school tools, their work, remembering which World Language Teacher they have ... many things. Help them be responsible for taking care of things at home. Don't forget to SIGN and RETURN the HOMES (Habits of a Manara Explorer Tracker Report.

I will begin listing specific Learning Targets that we are covering starting next week.

As always -- if you have any questions do not hesitate to contact me.
