P U M P K I N S

We've been busy learning the life cycle of pumpkins, finding out what's inside a pumpkin, weighing, measuring, drawing and writing about pumpkins ... we are now PUMPKIN EXPERTS!

The children used cubes and links to measure how tall and links to measure around their pumpkins -- they worked in teams and collaborated to make sure their work was accurate.

Next, we weighed the pumpkins -- we used milk and hand sanitizer and added up the ounces when our scale balanced. Some pumpkins weighed as much as 60 ounces and some as little as 6 ounces.

Not enough! This pumpkin is heavy!!!!

We needed to add a lot to get the scale balanced.

Let's put on more! This is not balanced!!!

He was a great Community Helper visitor!!! Especially since our school is right next to the airport!

Manara Monarch Migration

Yesterday, the children were got a preview of our Spring Expedition, right in our own backyard! These beautiful Monarch Butterflies are migrating and decided to spend a few days in these lovely bushes right next to our playground. The children got to see busy bees gorging on pollen, wasps buzzing around, and beautiful monarch butterflies getting their fill of nectar. What a wonderful learning moment!!

The children practiced being very quiet so as not to scare the butterflies. They realized that the bees would leave them alone if they did not swat at them. The bees were very busy gathering pollen ... what was really neat is that if you got very close to them, you could see their "cheeks" filled with bright yellow pollen.

These bushes are behind our school, next to the playground and are in FULL BLOOM and smell INCREDIBLE! What a great place for the butterflies to visit!

If you click on the the picture above,  you will see bees and butterflies living in harmony!

This is the best picture of the bee that I could get!

Donor's Choose Project

We want to make sure our students have the materials they need to succeed, so Ms. Frye just created a request for the Kindergarten thru 2nd grade classrooms.  We would like to have trays and sanitizing spray to help the children carry their lunches to the classroom.

Please click on the link below to donate .... Please pass this post and link along to your friends and relatives!!!!

Donor's Choose Project -- Lunch Trays

MACC, Snack, & THE VET!

On Friday, October 3, 2014, Kindergarten thru 2nd grade participated in their first Manara Academy Community Circle (MACC). The children had a great time watching and listening about all the wonderful learning going on throughout the school! Our class sang our Firefighter song!

(to the tune of I'm a Little Teapot)
We're firefighters, we're Mrs. E's crew
we put our boots and helmets on.
We hurry to the fire and give a SHOUT!
With a burst of water the fire's OUT!!!

Several of our friends were out for EID and/or sick on Friday! But will have a chance to participate in the next MACC on Friday, November 17!

Congratulations to Amaan ... he is our FIRST Exemplary Explorer!
He received the green ribbon for Gratitude .... Amaan is ALWAYS very kind
to his friends and teachers and says THANK YOU 99.9% of the time!
KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!!!!  Congratulations!

On Monday, we had lunch outside and then decided to have SNACK on the green carpet -- like a picnic ... sometimes you just have to change it up to make school more FUN!
Don't forget to pack your child a healthy snack each day! They love "showing off" their great snacks to their friends!

THE VET

Today, October 8, 2014, we were visited by Dr. Hill and his faithful companion Gurney. Gurney is about 7 years old and was rescued by Dr. Hill. The children learned that when Gurney goes to the VET ... it's just like when they go to the Doctor or Dentist for a checkup.

Gurney was very well behaved and the children learned a LOT from Dr. Hill.
Dr. Hill showing the children Gurney's teeth. He explained that he brushed Gurney's teeth and Gurney also needs to have his teeth cleaned every year!!

Dr. Hill checking Gurney's ears with the Otoscope! He can also use it to check his eyes and his throat. Doctors use that same instrument to check human ears, eyes, and throats!!!

Dr. Hill checks Gurney's heart and lungs with the Stethoscope!
Just like humans, a stethoscope checks to make sure your heartbeat and lungs and sometimes even your tummy are healthy!

The children from Mrs. Miller's and my class listening to Dr. Hill!

Some of the children were able to give a quick pet to Gurney!
They learned that a dog needs to smell your hand first and then you can give it a nice soft pet on it's back ... but always ask the pet's owner first.

Thank You Dr. Hill and Gurney for coming to visit us!!!!!!
